Wallington, NJ: Once Democratic Stronghold Sees Republican Surge in 2024 Election

Wallington, New Jersey, a town of just over 11,000 residents and home to the highest percentage of Polish Americans (35%) among U.S. towns its size, has experienced a dramatic political shift over the last decade.

In 2012, the town supported Democratic candidates by a 13-point margin. However, this Democratic advantage began eroding in 2016, when Wallington swung to the Republicans by 15 points. The trend continued in 2020, with Republicans extending their lead to a 16-point margin.

The 2024 election marked the most significant shift yet, with Republicans winning Wallington by an unprecedented 30-point margin. The sharp change reflects broader trends in voter behavior, including increasing alignment between culturally conservative communities and Republican policies.

This transformation highlights the challenges facing Democrats as they attempt to regain support in communities that once formed the backbone of their coalition.
