State Senator and Former GOP Chairman to Serve as Acting U.S. Attorney Pending Senate Confirmation
President Donald Trump has selected State Sen. Douglas J. Steinhardt as the next U.S. Attorney for New Jersey, the New Jersey Globe has confirmed. Steinhardt, a former Republican state chairman and a close Trump ally, will assume the role in an acting capacity as he awaits Senate confirmation.
A staunch Trump supporter, Steinhardt, 56, has represented New Jersey’s 23rd legislative district in the State Senate since 2022 and previously served as chairman of the New Jersey Republican Party during Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign. He briefly launched a gubernatorial bid in 2021 before withdrawing.
Political and Legal Background
Steinhardt is a partner at the Florio Perrucci law firm, where he worked alongside the late Democratic Gov. Jim Florio. He also served 15 years as mayor of Lopatcong, has led the Warren County GOP since 2004, and currently holds legal counsel roles for Sussex County and the Warren County Sheriff’s Office.
If confirmed, Steinhardt would become the first sitting state legislator to serve as U.S. Attorney for New Jersey since 1953, when President Dwight Eisenhower appointed Assemblyman William Tompkins to the role.
