In a surprising move that underscores divisions within the New Jersey Republican Party, Assemblyman Bob Auth (R-Old Tappan), a staunch conservative and longtime supporter of former President Donald Trump, has thrown his support behind moderate State Senator Jon Bramnick (R-Westfield) in the 2025 gubernatorial race.
Auth, who served as a Trump delegate in 2016 and 2024, called Bramnick “the only Republican candidate who can win the general election” in a statement released Monday.
“He will bring the authentic, consistent, honest leadership we need to the Governor’s office,” said Auth. “What is important is Jon’s ability to find common ground, bringing the party together to win back the Governor’s seat and solve the mounting problems facing New Jersey.”
The endorsement is notable given Bramnick’s history of breaking with Trump. The Westfield senator refused to endorse the former president in 2016, 2020, or 2023, a stance that earned him criticism from Trump loyalists within the GOP. By contrast, Auth has been one of Trump’s most reliable New Jersey allies over the years, championing his policies and serving as a delegate to Republican National Conventions.
Auth cited his eight years working alongside Bramnick, who previously served as Assembly Minority Leader, as a key reason for his endorsement.
“No two people, even in the same political party, are 100% aligned on every issue,” Auth said. “Jon’s leadership and pragmatic approach have earned my respect and confidence.”
Bramnick, known for his moderate stance and bipartisan approach, faces a potentially contentious GOP primary as he seeks to position himself as the most electable Republican candidate in a state where Democrats have long dominated statewide elections.
Auth’s backing could lend Bramnick credibility among conservative voters, potentially broadening his appeal in the primary. However, it remains to be seen whether Bramnick can unite a fractured party that includes both Trump loyalists and Republicans looking for a more moderate path forward.
The New Jersey governor’s race is expected to be closely watched as Republicans seek to reclaim the office for the first time since Chris Christie left in 2018. Bramnick’s campaign has not yet commented on Auth’s endorsement.
